Charity ride for local resident slated Sept. 13
The TA Memorial Riders group is sponsoring a YOLO (You Only Live Once) Charity Ride to raise funds for medical treatment, transportation costs and any other financial need that may arise for local resident Yvonne Dwigans.
The Saturday, Sept. 13 ride is being run to assist Dwigans, the daughter of Scott and Trina Stierwalt of Cloverdale, who was diagnosed with cancer last October while she was pregnant. She continues to fight an aggressive cancer while continuing to be there for her four young children.
Organizers invite everyone to show their support at $15 per rider or $25 a couple. Registration is set for 9-11 a.m. at Walmart Transportation in Greencastle with the kickstands kicked up at 11 o'clock.
Those who come early can enjoy a free-will breakfast with lunch available afterward.
T-shirts will be avaiable for sale, while a 50/50 drawing is planned along with door prizes.
Yvonne Dwigans is a 35-year-old mother of three boys and a miracle daughter who was diagnosed with cancer one month after becoming pregnant with daughter Ashton.
Shortly after becoming pregnant, she had an ultrasound in which a mass was found on her cervix but thought to be a polyp. Surgery was scheduled to remove the polyp, and at that time doctors discovered it was a very aggressive form of cancer that affects 1.6 people out of every 100,000.
Doctors told her she would have to make a choice to terminate the pregnancy to save her life or save the baby, and leave her three boys without a mother.
Yvonne went as far as setting up a funeral and facing the day she would have to say goodbye to her little angel Ashton.
At 19 weeks pregnant and scheduled for a hysterectomy, Yvonne got a new course of action from the pathology team. She was able to take treatments and carry baby Ashton long enough before delivery for her own survival. The baby was born healthy and got to meet her mommy at 31 weeks.
Although there were difficult times and lots of obstacles, baby Ashton is beautiful and healthy today.
Unfortunately with illness comes the reality of life with several types of the treatments, complications of surgeries and more surgery to come.
Yvonne hasn't been able to work since her illness which affects her income and insurance while putting a financial burden on her family as she continues to fight the aggressive cancer daily.
The Sept. 13 Charity Ride is designed to help get local residents together to help make a difference for this family.
