Carl Calvin Blau

Thursday, October 2, 2014

On Sept. 30, 2014 Carl Calvin Blau, 78, a great man with an immense heart, left us with lives filled with memories and an unfillable void in our hearts.

Born on Sept. 28, 1936 in Albany, N.Y., he graduated from the Hudson Valley Technical Institute and subsequently received his Bachelor's degree and Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Dayton.

As a long-time employee of the National Cash Register (NCR) Corp., he was a quality assurance engineer, and served as president of the Affiliate Societies Council of Dayton.

After retiring from NCR he and his wife retired on the farm where she and her 14 siblings were raised, and the farm became the center of the family's universe and gathering point for the Green family annual reunion.

He served as an adjunct faculty member at Ivy Tech in Greencastle for 20 years.

As member of the North Putnam School Board, he forcefully advocated for higher educational standards for seven years.

He was Christian by faith, and served on the boards of Grace Lutheran Church in West Carrollton, Ohio, and the Clinton Falls Community Church.

As Dad and Papaw (or just Pa) he was an incessant troublemaker, always the instigator of water and snowball fights where he usually gave worse than he received. Time and time again he carefully positioned dozens of action figures on the living room floor, only to have them knocked over repeatedly by a delighted grandkid.

He was a fan of well-kept hair, $2 bills, spaghetti, Walmart and the Dollar Menu.

By a wide margin, he was the best man we have ever known. The male lead of an epic love story he was married to his "sweet wife" Cathy for 54 years. A glimpse of their relationship can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh4h55pTtv8.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi Kathyrn Blau (maiden name Green), sons Matthew Scott Blau, Robert Edward Blau and Carl Anthony Blau, daughters-in-law Gay Blau, Bamani Blau and Sibel Blau, sisters Sue Blau and Justine Cook, brothers Roger Joly, Ricky Stegmann, Tommy Blau and Mikey Blau, Aunt Luella Bates, and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother Elizziebell Joly, father Carl Edward Blau, son Todd Blau, and sisters Barbara Michela and Eleanor Eccles.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Matthew S. Blau officiating. Interment will follow at Union Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 3 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers please direct donations to the Center for Cancer Innovation (cci.washington.edu).

Condolences and expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.Hopkins-Rector.com.
