Trick-or-treat hours set for Halloween, special events could be real thriller

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

Don't let this spook you, but Halloween is right around the corner.

And around the square.

For the popular annual Halloween on the Square downtown Greencastle trick-or-treat event is scheduled to take place on Friday from 4-6 p.m., the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Greencastle have announced.

A couple of new wrinkles have been included for 2014 with a Halloween costume parade slated to commence at 5:45 p.m., starting from the parking lot in front of Mark Hammer's accounting office (the northeast corner of Walnut and Vine streets) behind Eitel's Florist.

Also, a children's pumpkin decorating party, with a limited supply of pumpkins provided, is set for 4-6 p.m.

Meanwhile, Lita Sandy of the Dance Workshop will be teaching the Michael Jackson "Thriller" dance to interested youngsters on the north side of the square. Franklin Street will be closed from Indiana to Jackson during the 6-8 p.m. event to accommodate the dance instruction and subsequent performance.

Along with the fun of trick or treating around the square, there will also be a Trunk or Treat event in which local emergency services personnel will pass out treats from their vehicles parked along South Indiana Street (between Walnut and Poplar).

Participants are expected to include members of the Greencastle Police Dept., Putnam County Sheriff's Dept., Indiana State Police Dept., DePauw Police Dept., Operation Life, Putnam County FOP and Area 30 Law Enforcement Class.

Special events are also being planned at the Putnam County Public Library in celebration of Halloween and its Imagination Portal project (more information is expected to be announced at the Oct. 22 Library Board meeting).

"The Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Greencastle are pleased to plan this event," Chamber Executive Director Tammy Johnson said, "and we thank all the Greencastle downtown merchants and organizations, the Putnam County Public Library and all of our Putnam County Emergency Services organizations for their time, efforts and donations.

"This is a great example of everyone coming together to make a fun family event for the whole community," Johnson added.

Meanwhile, individual Putnam County communities have established their trick-or-treat hours.

All community trick-or-treat hours limit activity to the night of the holiday itself on Friday, Oct. 31.

Those specific trick-or-treat hours, listed by community, are:

-- Greencastle -- 4-8 p.m. (starting at 4 p.m. due to the downtown event).

-- Cloverdale -- 5:30-8 p.m.

-- Fillmore -- 6-8 p.m.

-- Bainbridge -- 6-8 p.m.

-- Roachdale -- 6-8 p.m.

-- Russellville -- 6-8 p.m.

As is the custom locally, residents welcoming trick-or-treaters are urged to turn on a porch light during the appropriate period. Likewise, Halloween revelers are asked to honor that custom and avoid homes that do not have an outside light illuminated.
