Walter 'Gene' Martin

Walter "Gene" Martin, 68, of Greencastle, and formerly of Rockville, died at 12:53 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014 in the emergency room of Indiana University North Hospital in Carmel.

He retired from the Indiana Department of Corrections with 44 years of service.

He was superintendent of the Rockville Correctional Facility many years and retired from Miami Correctional Facility as superintendent.

He was born Dec. 7, 1945 in Paris, Ill., to the late Alwyn Martin and Mabel Rhoads Martin.

He was a 1963 graduate of Paris (Ill.) High School and a 1967 graduate of the University of Indianapolis.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lynda Giles Martin, whom he married Sept. 30, 1967 in Indianapolis.

Also surviving are one son, Adam H. Martin of Anderson; a daughter, Elizabeth Yates of Indianapolis; and four grandsons, Jacob and Conner Martin and Liam and Owen Yates.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Martin.

A family memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
