PUTNAMVILLE -- An Indianapolis man, six months into his prison sentence and less than a year from his projected release date, could face an additional one to six years for allegedly battering a Putnamville correctional officer.

Randy H. Wilson, 22, is charged with battery on a public safety officer for a Sept. 2 incident involving Officer Logan Terrell of Putnamville Correctional Facility. A Class 5 felony, the crime is punishable by one to six years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

According to court documents, Terrell told Correctional Police Officer David Wire that Wilson became angry when the officer turned off the television in the day room.

At that point, Terrell said, Wilson became disorderly and vocally aggressive toward the officer. Then without clear warning, Wilson punched Terrell in the jaw, the officer told Wire.

At this point, Terrell radioed for assistance and Wilson was escorted to the disciplinary restrictive housing unit.

Terrell was evaluated and found to have no injuries.

When interviewed by Wire, Wilson gave a different account, saying the incident began when Terrell woke him to say that Wilson had a pass. When he got up, Wilson said he was told he no longer had a pass.

Angered at this, Wilson said he confronted Terrell about lying to him. Wilson claimed that Terrell also became angry and referred to the offender with a racial slur.

At this point, Wilson said he lost his temper and punched Terrell.

The incident happened outside of the view of any cameras, but Wire found that Wilson was sitting in the day room watching television just prior to the incident and did not approach Terrell until after the television was turned off, which contradicts the offender's statements.

Additionally, Correctional Officer Angela Starr said she was not close enough to hear what was said, but that she saw Wilson hit Terrell with a closed fist. Further, she said Terrell remained on his feet throughout the incident.

Wilson is serving a two-year sentence out of Bartholomew County for domestic battery. His earliest projected release date for the original sentence is Sept. 3, 2015.
