Frederick M. Swearingen, 82, of Brazil, went to be with his Lord on Thursday evening, Nov. 20, 2014 at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, surrounded by his family.

Fred was born April 1, 1932 in Cloverland, Ind., to Ross O. and Clara F. Hamm Swearingen.

He was a 1950 graduate of Staunton High School, serving as president of his class, then went on to serve our country in Korea. He was employed by IBM in Greencastle for 32 years and was a member of the Brazil First United Methodist Church.

He was a loyal St. Louis Cardinals fan and attended numerous ISU basketball games.

Fred enjoyed music and played piano for the Swearingen brothers' quartet, the Loyal Sons. He was happiest when there were family get-togethers and always thought of others first.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Anna Mae Swearingen; four brothers, John Swearingen, Robert Swearingen, Lloyd Swearingen and an infant brother Hubert Clyde Swearingen; nephew Steve Swearingen and a sister-in-law Wilma Icenogle.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Carol J. Swearingen, whom he married on Nov. 27, 1977; their children, Dean Swearingen of Brazil, Tom Swearingen (LeAnna) of Cloverdale, Jeff Swearingen (Tonya) of Brazil, Jane Ann Garlit (Mike) of Terre Haute, Todd Swearingen (Natalie) of Carbon, Tina Payne of Monrovia, Jeff Thorlton (Naomi) of Martinsville, Ill., and Ken Thorlton of Plainfield, N.J.; 12 grandchildren, Craig Swearingen, Cheri Warren, Jennifer Fraser, Lauren Swearingen, Caleb Swearingen, Tyler Payne, Chelsea Payne, Ashlee Perkins, Alex Thorlton, Jake O'Rourke, Tyler O'Rourke and Garrett O'Rourke; 17 great-grandchildren, Brittany Warren, Jake Warren, Julia Swearingen, Ethan Swearingen, Teague Swearingen, Storm Swearingen, J.T. Fraser, Jessica Fraser, Savannah Payne, Adelynn Parker, A.J. Perkins, Alyse Perkins, McKenzie O'Rourke, Ryan O'Rourke, Lincoln O'Rourke, Graham O'Rourke and Cooper Payne; brother and sister-in-law Don and Karen Swearingen of Clay City; sister-in-law Wanda Swearingen of Brazil, sister-in-law Beverly Swearingen of Plainfield and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Brazil First United Methodist Church, 201 N. Meridian St., Brazil, with Pastor Steve Loft officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the church 4-8 p.m. Monday, and again Tuesday from 11 a.m. until time of services.
