Walter J. Sites, 89, of Yorktown, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 24, 2015 at his residence.

He was born Feb. 2, 1925 in Gaston, the son of Leslie R. and Aubrey L. (Wagner) Sites.

Walter graduated from Harrison School in 1943 and honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theatre.

He married the love of his life, Betty Ann Hardin, in 1943 and shared 70 years together prior to her death on Aug. 18, 2013.

Walter worked as a self-employed carpenter all of his life until his retirement in 2000.

He was a lifetime member of Bethel Church and former member of Eagles Lodge 231 and the Amvets.

Walter enjoyed fishing and tinkering with various carpentry projects and most importantly loved to spend time with his family.

Surviving are three children, Linda Barton (companion, Herbert Greene) of Muncie, Charles Sites (wife, Joan) of Cloverdale and Teresa Whitaker (companion, Elvis Whitaker) of Yorktown; eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, with another expected in May 2015; three step-great grandchildren; three brothers, Derryll Sites of Albany, Marvin Sites (wife, Joan) of Muncie and Robert Sites (wife, Jeanette) of Florida; one sister-in-law, Gladys Conwell of Stuart, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Walter Jay Sites; grandson Timothy Barton; great-granddaughter, Averi-Anna Whitaker; and one brother, Leslie R. Sites Jr.

Memorial services will be conduced at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 at Grace Baptist Church, 6401 W. River Rd., Muncie. Full military honors will be held at the church provided by the Veterans of Delaware County.

Cremation has taken place.

Friends may call at Grace Baptist Church from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.
