Irene Coleman, 93, died peacefully on March 2, 2015 in Beaufort, S.C., where she had lived the last six years, close to her youngest son (Richard) Jay and his wife Marlene.

She was born in Roachdale on June 11, 1921, the oldest daughter and one of six children born to James Virgil and Lucille (Ferguson) Sutherlin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Maurice" Coleman, son of Paul and Eva Mae (Hodge) Coleman of Putnam County, whom she married on Sept. 20, 1941; their son, Philip; three brothers, Jim, Harold and Dick; and one sister, Marie Scott.

Irene is survived by her son Jay, and his wife Marlene, of Beaufort, S.C.; three granddaughters whom she loved dearly, Sara Beth Willis and husband Niall of Sydney, Australia; Amy Michelle De Long and husband Mike of Elgin, Ill., and Emily Irene Coleman of Austin, Texas; two great-grandsons, Griffin Alexander and Logan Xavier Willis; and one sister, Ethyl Mae Hughes, of Indianapolis, and many nieces and nephews.

Irene and her husband, Maurice, lived in Camby, Mooresville and Petersburg, Ind., and belonged to the Monrovia Christian Church.

They retired to Monroe, La., for many years before returning to Plainfield to be closer to family. Later, after her husband's death, she lived near her sons.

A graveyard service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23 at Roachdale Cemetery. All friends are welcome to come celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Roachdale Christian Church in her name.
