Summer Reading Program set to start June 1 at PCPL

Monday, May 25, 2015

Summer Reading Program is just around the corner and the Putnam County Public Library is changing things up this year.

All participants must be under the age of 19 (high school students please) with age groups as follows, 0-5, 6-12 and 13-19.

The program lasts eight weeks with four official check-ins. In order to qualify for a check-in, a participant must read a minimum of 20 minutes per day, or 280 minutes (4.7 hours) every two weeks using the honor system.

For every 20 minutes above the minimum 280 bi-weekly minutes, a participant may earn an extra raffle ticket for the bi-weekly drawing.

There are a total of four official check-ins. Each check-in allows a patron to receive a coupon to McDonald's, a voucher for an Indiana Fevers game, and a raffle ticket for a bi-weekly drawing. Each bi-weekly drawing will be held on a Saturday. The dates are: June 13, June 27, July 11 and July 25.

Three winners from each age group will be announced on this day. Prizes can be picked up any time after the announcement. A grand prize drawing will be held Aug. 1. In order to be eligible for the grand prize drawing, you must have completed the program with a total of four check-ins.

Bonus raffle tickets can be earned by reading books on the ALSC Summer reading list for appropriate grades (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). One bonus ticket per book on the list. Prizes will be on display for the two-week period. Patrons who complete the program can enter their raffle towards a specific basket.

Grand prize will be an iPad.

There are no guidelines for what to read, only that participants read -- for example, magazines and graphic novels and picture books are just as worthy reads as fiction and nonfiction books.
