U.S. 231 closing Monday for railroad repairs in Greencastle

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced that U.S. 231 (North Jackson Street) will close in Greencastle at 6 a.m. Monday, July 6 at the railroad tracks.

CSX Railroad will be repairing the crossing at Elizabeth Street, just north of Shadowlawn Avenue.

The project is expected to take a week to complete with the roadway scheduled to reopen at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 10.

The official detour follows U.S. 36 east to State Road 75 south to U.S. 40 west and back to U.S. 231. Traffic traveling in the opposite direction will use the same detour in reverse.

Meanwhile, INDOT advised local drivers of another area closing set for Monday, July 6.

State Road 234 in southern Montgomery County will close on or after Monday, July 6 for a bridge maintenance and repair project approximately five miles east of U.S. 231.

The project will replace a small structure at that locationnear Ladoga with the roadway is scheduled to reopen Aug. 8.

The $331,665 contract was awarded to 3d Company Inc.

The official State Road 234 detour follows U.S. 231 north to Interstate 74 east to State Road 75 south and back to SR 234. Traffic traveling in the opposite direction will use the same detour in reverse.

INDOT reminds motorists to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone.

  • seriously? I live 2 mins from work, use that route every day to get to work. I'm not driving all the way down to 75 and then to 36 just to come down 231 to work.... I'll find a side road... ****.

    Which makes sense.....

    Depending on how much traffic that at-grade crossing sees, both train and vehicular, the crossing will need not only track maintenance but also a rehab of the surface itself. And guess who does more damage to the track and surface in the immediate vicinity of that crossing? Hint: it's not the trains.

    Yet the railroad will invest thousands of dollars and resources to make it not only safer, but more pleasant on your car's suspension.

    The alternative is ignoring the intersection until a problem occurs which hopefully doesn't involve serious injury or death.

    As to a more convenient detour.......is the College Avenue crossing just south of Frazier Street closed as well? Behind the museum? If not, it could take you all of an extra minute to get around this worthy effort.
