Julia Dietrich Knuppel

Julia Dietrich Knuppel, 94, Greencastle, died Aug. 10, 2015 at Greencastle.

She was born on June 12, 1921 in Bloomington, the daughter of William Henry Dietrich and Katherine (Whiteside) Dietrich and was the youngest of eight siblings.

She graduated from Bloomington High School in 1938, earned an AB in English from Indiana University in 1942, a master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1952 and completed all but the dissertation for a PhD in English from the University of Illinois.

She married Boyd Berton Knuppel, DVM, on Jan. 2, 1948 and deeply mourned his death in 2001.

She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Ellen Knuppel and her husband Thomas Corwith Campbell III; her

granddaughter, Julia Burdine Campbell and her husband Javier Angel Nieto-Monc'o; and her grandson, Thomas Corwith Campbell IV.

Numerous nieces and nephews and their children also survive her. She was particularly attached to her good friends Jean and Tom Baker.

She had a relentless work ethic that ranged from hammering the nuances of spoken and written English into student's heads, tiling 17 bathrooms, managing her husband's veterinary practice and accounts, and maintaining varied rental properties, to spending summers and vacations caring for beloved nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

She has highly articulate and could deliver insightful praise or withering criticism with equal facility. Her attitude of cheerfulness and generosity to family and close friends, sly sense of humor and the ability to overcome obstacles were all noteworthy. And as her granddaughter put it, "Once she has done everything she thinks she needs to do, she puts her feet up and has a beer."

Memorial services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 at Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale. Visitation will be on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 4 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Interment will be in the Valhalla Memory Gardens at Bloomington.
