James Allan Akins

James Allan "Jim" Akins, 53, of Greencastle, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2015.

He was born on June 20, 1962 in Greencastle.

Jim was a graduate of Greencastle High School, attended Ivy Tech Community College and was a 31-year employee of INDOT, where he served as a project supervisor.

He was a long-time member of the NRA and was an avid football fan, especially the Indianapolis Colts.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Eileen Elcie Barcus Akins; a grandson, DeAndre McCombs; a brother-in-law, Mike Lillard; and his uncle who helped raise him, Waldo Shoemaker.

Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Michelle; three children, Ashley Salsman and husband Joshua, Amber McCombs and husband Paul, and Joshua Akins; a sister, Barbara Lillard; his aunt who helped raise him, Phyllis Shoemaker Thacker and husband Dave; eight beloved grandchildren who were the apple of his eye; and several nieces and nephews .

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Rick Fay officiating.

Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of services.
