Tuesday, September 29, 2015

Doris Maxine Callender, 98, a lifelong resident of Morton, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015.

Born May 7, 1917 in Putnam County, she was the daughter of Wilbur and Charlotte (Nutgrass) Clodfelter and was a graduate of Rensselaer High School.

She married Eugene Callender and he preceded her in death.

Maxine was a homemaker and had retired from J.C. Penney in Greencastle, where she worked as a sales clerk. She had previously worked at Wurtz's Dime Store and ran the restaurant at the Morton Garage.

She was the oldest member of the Union Chapel United Methodist Church.

Maxine was a person who loved life and people, especially children. They were drawn to her like a magnet. Although she never had any children of her own, she was a mother to many. She was always there to help anyone, who needed anything. She loved current events, sports, traveling, dining out (if she could be the one treating), and family gatherings.

She was a shining example of a pure and caring heart that will never be replaced or matched, loved by many.

Maxine is survived by her daughter, Becky Voss, and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Hubert Clodfelter; a sister, Kathleen Voris; and two nephews, James and Bill Clodfelter.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Union Chapel United Methodist Church at 2 p.m.

The family will receive friends from noon until time of service on Saturday at the church.
