Friday, July 22, 2016

Mary Jacquelyn (Steward) McGaughey, 81, of Russellville, passed away Friday, July 22, 2016 in her beloved farm home with her family by her side.

Jacque was born Nov. 8, 1934 in Lima, Ohio, the daughter of Cleon and Bernice (Darnall) Steward.

She married Morris (Buddy) McGaughey on June 23, 1956 in Bainbridge. He preceded her in death in 1996.

Jacque was a 1952 graduate of Bainbridge High School and a 1956 graduate of Purdue University where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority.

She also received her Master's Degree from Indiana State University.

She spent her entire professional career as a home economics teacher in the North Putnam school district. Over her 35-year tenure, Jacque taught at both Russellville and North Putnam.

Because of her passion for home economics, she was actively involved in Putnam County Home Extension, served as 4-H leader and judge, and was a proud member of Delta Kappa Gamma (society of women educators).

She was also a member of the Putnam County Community Foundation Board of Directors, Eastern Star and Putnam County Retired Teachers Association.

Jacque was active in the Russellville Community Church. Whenever she was asked to serve she would never hesitate. She loved Ladies Aid, being an elder and the Ask'em Children's Ministry.

She was delighted to attend and help with activities at the Russellville Community Center. In her later years she loved swimming at the Athena Center in Crawfordsville and she valued the friendships she made.

The greatest enjoyment of her life were her seven grandchildren. She was a very devoted fan and loved watching them participate in their various sports and school activities. She would never miss the opportunity to cheer on her Purdue Boilermakers.

Jacque and her husband, Buddy, were honored as the 1998 inductees as the Putnam County Hall of Fame Farm Family.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Suzanne (Mark) Stern of Kewanee, Ill.; two sons, Steve (Roxanne) McGaughey of Roachdale; and David (Anita) McGaughey of Lafayette; and seven grandchildren: Riley, Ashley, Amy, Carlye, Ali, Angela and Auna. A granddaughter, Amber, preceded her in death.

Jacque is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Diane (Don) Hoffman; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Perry; and several nieces and a nephew.

Jacque will be remembered by her contagious smile, positive outlook on life, and one who only saw the best in people.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 26 at Russellville Community Church, 103 W. St., Russellville, IN 46175 with Pastor Alan Small officiating. Burial will follow in Hebron Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, July 25 from 4-7 p.m. at the church.
