Barbara L. Mercer, 74, a former Indianapolis resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, Aug. 8, 2016 at her daughter's residence in Shelbyville.

She was born June 6, 1942 to Arnold Pennington and Wilma (Ford) Pennington in Indianapolis.

She married Gary Mercer on Jan. 30, 1988, and he survives

Other survivors include her in-laws, Halford and Lelia Mercer of Brazil; five children, Tami Adams Presley, of Cape Coral, Fla., Kim Thompson, of Indianapolis, Alan Adams and wife Kim, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Jennifer Dennison and husband Chet, of Shelbyville, and Mike Adams and wife Christie, Indianapolis; stepson John Mercer of Terre Haute; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Merrill "Bud" Pennington; and infant sister Regina Pennington.

Mrs. Mercer had lived in Greencastle for a year after moving from Indianapolis.

She attended Arsenal Tech High School.

Mrs. Mercer worked as a secretary at Community Hospital East, retiring in 2004 with 20 years of service.

She attended the Church of Acts in Indianapolis.

Barbara enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, lying on the beach and spending time with her family.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11 at Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Rd., Shelbyville, IN 46176.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12 at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.
