I-70 accident scene leads to drug arrest of Terre Haute man

Investigation of an accident scene along Interstate 70 in western Putnam County Wednesday morning resulted in the arrest of a Vigo County man on drug-related charges, Indiana State Police at the Putnamville Post report.

Around 11 a.m. Wednesday, Indiana State Police Region III Dispatch Center received a third-party call reporting a disabled motorist in the eastbound lanes of I-70 near the 29-mile marker, 12 miles west of Cloverdale.

Trooper Yan Dravigne and Probationary Trooper David Cox Jr. responded to the scene and noticed that the disabled motorist call was in reality, a one-vehicle property-damage accident.

Police discovered that a 2004 white Ford pickup had struck the barrier cable in the median of the interstate and sustained front-end damage.

Further investigation found the driver, Roy Charles, 41, of Terre Haute, appeared to be intoxicated and he subsequently failed roadside field sobriety testing.

Charles was taken to Putnam County Hospital for a chemical test, and he tested positive for benzodiazepine, a Schedule IV drug, State Police said.

Subsequently Charles was incarcerated in the Putnam County Jail on misdemeanor charges of possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and maintaining a common nuisance.

No court date has been set in the case.
